Days after the World Health Organisation labeled the growing monkeypox outbreak a global health emergency, British health agencies have secured funding to develop a standardized approach to test the performance of vaccines being used or developed against monkeypox. The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) stated that it would provide $375,000 to the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to develop standard tools to assess the strength and duration of immune responses generated by current vaccines.

Dr. Richard Hatchett, the CEO of CEPI, stated that the global impact of monkeypox requires exploration of existing countermeasures such as currently available stockpiled vaccinations that would be enough to curb the transmission of monkeypox. He also added that, apart from administration fees, the tools would be made freely available to all scientific communities. This move will ensure that a common standardized assessment is available for documenting vaccine performance against monkeypox globally.
